The Chilliwack Youth Orchestra is hosting a concert fundraiser on Saturday, April 16 to benefit our local refugees.

Soon to wrap up their second season, this non-profit independent organization provides high-quality music education to Chilliwack’s youth, offering programs for junior, intermediate and senior students in strings, woodwind, brass and percussion.

Under the direction of conductor David Voth and artistic director Johan Louwersheimer, the more than 30-piece youth orchestra will perform a selection of contemporary and classical music, including pieces from Bizet’s Symphony No. 1 in C major, The Moldau, and diverse cultural pieces including Mo Li Hua and a Syrian lullaby.

All of the proceeds from the concert will assist Chilliwack Cares’ Outreach Program for local refugee families.

“When we started up last year, we decided to do at least one benefit concert per year to give back to the community, and to encourage community within the members,” said Helen Balzer, president of the Chilliwack Youth Orchestra.

“There are refugees here in Chilliwack who could use our help. This is something we could do.”

The performance takes place at Chilliwack Baptist Church (46336 First Ave.) on April 16 at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. Minimum donation of $15 for adults or $10 for students.

Refreshments and a silent auction will be available during intermission. Visit the orchestra on Facebook for a sneak peek of items up for bid.
