students.

Every February, a program called For The Love Of Reading is held at Lake Cowichan Secondary School — for the middle school students — to challenge the each class to read for 10,000 minutes or more. The program is used to promote reading and encourage students to read a variety of material and to get some friendly competition amongst the middle school classes.

The reading can be at school or at home. This program is sponsored by the school’s library.

“Research shows that students, who read over 90 minutes a day, perform better in all subject areas.

“If we can encourage kids to take an interest in reading at a young age, then hopefully this love of reading will develop into a life-long habit.” said Kelly Dougan, teacher-librarian.

It’s amazing on how much the middle school students read. Throughout the middle school, there were 5 top readers:

Grade 6 level: Amber Clayton

Grade 7 level: Hayden Holman, Teresa Melchior, and Mason Day

Grade 8 level: Isabella Kuta. With each of them reading over 1,000 minutes alone.

“I find that reading helps the mind think.” said middle school student, Theresa Melchior.

The program helps student’s brains think, be more focused, and be ready for the rest of their day. At the end of the program, the class wins a special prize. Its amazing to see how much the students read and how much they enjoy it.

For The Love of Reading program is really something to love, enjoy, and have fun with.
