Two Highland Secondary School media students now understand what it means to shoot a film on location.

Recently, Brent Wallace and Doug Sharpe spent a day on set with the production company shooting the final scenes for the feature film Elegy, starring Penelope Cruz and Sir Ben Kingsley.

The company was filming on location at Cox Bay near Tofino.

Ten years ago this week in the Comox Valley Record:

A robber was arrested early Thursday after allegedly holding up two Courtenay convenience stores.

A robber entered the Mac’s Milk store on Cumberland Road at about 3 a.m., brandished a hypodermic needle, and demanded cash. He fled with less than $20.

At 6:30 a.m., a man entered the Apple Tree Grocery, threatened the cashier with a syringe, and fled with a similar amount.

Fifteen years ago this week in the Comox Valley Record:

A journalist who was fired by the Comox Valley Echo appealed for help to the school board on Tuesday.

David Beattie worked at the Echo for three and a half months as a news reporter. On May 31, he was dismissed from his job over a story he wrote on parent dissent over the way sex education is approached in School District 71.

Twenty years ago this week in the Comox Valley Record:

Sexual harassment is a fact of life at CFB Comox, says MP Bob Skelly.

Skelly has asked the Canadian Human Rights Commission to investigate charges of sexual harassment, claiming a number of the women have approached their MPs, local women’s support organization and Human Rights Commission complaining about the “prevalence of the problem at CFB Comox.”

Skelly claims that one woman with over 10 years of military service has been accused of having an “anti-military attitude” and of bringing the harassment on herself, by “dressing provocatively.”

Ronnie Watkins may one day end up opening his own bicycle store if he wins any more soap box derbies.

Watkins raced down the steep hill on Noel Avenue to claim the 100 class title Sunday at the second annual Comox Kiwanis Soap Box Derby.
