Fire departments all across Canada are joining up to help create a Memorial which will eventually be erected on LeBreton Flats in Ottawa.
The National Capital Commission (NCC) and the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF) announced in September 2010 the winning concept for the construction of the Canadian Firefighters Memorial.
Part of the memorial will be made out of refurbished brass couplings which were used in the past at many fire departments.
Recently the Golden Fire department received a letter thanking them for their contribution from the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
Golden Fire Chief Ken McClure explained that it has been many years since this type of coupling was used by fire departments but many of them still have them around in attics or basements.
“We have repurposed a coupling from our fire department and it met the qualifications. They used our coupling to be a part of the site,” McClure said.
As for how it feels to be a part of the memorial McClure said it was wonderful.
“We never want to see a firefighter loose his life. However after being a part of saluting those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. It is heart felt to show people really care about what happens.”
McClure who recently attended a memorial for a fallen firefighter in British Columbia explained that it is important to always remember the people who do these types of jobs or volunteer to help protect their neighbours.
The new memorial intended as a national commemoration recognizing firefighters from all parts of the country, is to be located on a prominent site owned by the National Capital Commission at LeBreton Flats near the Canadian War Museum.
