A mind-body connection

BioDanza workshops will be presented in Vernon in August by Marian Starkenbrug from the Netherlands

Marian Starkenbrug from the Netherlands will be in Vernon to present two experiential workshops in BioDanza, a system for human integration, health and personal growth.

Starkenbrug has studied this form for many years with some of the best instructors in the world. She brings experience and sensitivity to this connective movement experience.

The combination of music, expression and emotion enables us to express our inner selves through movement in the workshops. The exercises stimulate health and encourage a zest for living which increases self-confidence and self-esteem. Melancholy, shyness and loneliness fade to make way for joy and passion in life. It invites us to make a deep connection with ourselves and with others.

“BioDanza is not only for people who love music and dancing,” says Starkenbrug. “It is not about knowing ‘right steps’ or ‘looking good.’ BioDanza encourages you to move in your own way. It helps you listen to your body, so you can move and feel in a feedback loop with yourself and with others. Everyone is welcome.”

Developed by Dr. Rolando Toro Araneda, a professor in psychology and medical anthropology in Chile, BioDanza is now practised in more than 30 countries to significantly reduce stress and improve a sense of wellbeing. Stress is handled better by increasing the ability to communicate and by improving the quality of relationships. The word BioDanza means “to dance with life.”

Workshop participants will discover their innate connection with the life in themselves, in the cosmos, and in each other. “It’s about the mind – body – soul connection,” says Starkenbrug. “It is a method to find your way back to your inner soul, the inner peace and love for yourself and others, so that you can live your life in harmony. The music and exercises transform the experiences of our lives physically, emotionally and psychologically.”

Sponsored by the Center for Spiritual Living, the BioDanza Workshops will take place this Friday and Aug. 19 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Center, 2913-29th Ave., Vernon. Doors open at 7:15 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $10 for each workshop. Pre-register by phoning 250-549- 4399, but drop-ins are welcome if there is space.
