ACTIVE ADULTS: A month of activities at the rec centre

Busy month ahead at South Surrey Recreation Centre

February was a busy month filled with happy, healthy heart-related activities for all ages at South Surrey Recreation Centre.

Our second annual Family Day was a huge success with more than 100 families joining the planned fitness activities and other family gym programs.

Families enjoyed playing pickleball together with our 55+ pickleball volunteers who guided them through the game and rules.

Thanks to all the volunteers who came out to participate in this true family event.

This month we are beginning to see the transition to our beautiful new expansion.

The original facility is undergoing a facelift with new paint and furniture, lights, and more, in preparation to co-ordinate with the new expansion.

The community café is also advancing with outreach to our community service groups for assistance to help with equipment and mentorship.

If you are interested in assisting or connecting to this amazing project, contact Deirdre Goudriaan at deirdre@teamplayconsulting.com

Our ‘Enjoy’ bus trip to visit the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary to see the beautiful snow geese still has space for March 28.

This tour includes an educational guided tour as the lesser snow geese prepare to depart in April for their northward migration back to Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean.

Lunch at the well- appointed Charthouse Restaurant in Steveston complete with harbour views and a tour of Britannia Heritage Shipyard will end this great day.

We start spring planning for our Intergenerational Therapeutic Garden this month.

We have some wonderful ideas for the garden this year, which includes building a café garden and organizing and cleaning up the edible and herb garden.

If you would like to help in the garden, please contact Terri at 604-592-6962.

Our popular foot-care clinics take place on Saturday, March 15 at Sunnyside Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

If you require a follow-up appointment or would like a first-time appointment, please contact our front office and ask to be placed on the appointment list, at 604-592-6970.

Terri Focker, a community service assistant for the City of Surrey, writes monthly on seniors activities.
