ACTIVE ADULTS: Stay fit throughout the year

For those looking to keep New Year's fitness resolutions intact, there's plenty of options at the South Surrey Rec Centre.

Most of us break our New Year’s resolutions by the end of the year, and a third do not survive past February.

Set yourself up for success this year with achievable plans for improving your well- being.

You can accomplish these goals at South Surrey Rec Centre.

• Did you know that dancing improves brain function on many levels?

Through regular aerobic training that incorporates some type of dance at least once a week, anyone can maximize his or her brain function.

Our Zumba, line dance and ballroom classes offer you the opportunity to stimulate your brain. Try a drop-in Zumba class, either adult or 55+ where you will be energized with Latin music. We also offer Family Zumba and Zumbatonic for children, to get them started early.

Are you looking for a gentle introduction to physical activity?

Chair exercise reduces your risk of falls by improving your balance and co-ordination in the safety of your chair or by standing with your chair for support. This class incorporates the use of small weights and resistance bands for muscle development.

The next step would be our Fitness 55+ classes offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday with different types of fitness exercises offered on each day.

You will find the same results with our 55+Tai Chi classes that are a moderate introduction to this Chinese system of exercise providing better health through slow, non-stressful movement.

• Would you like to volunteer in your community but are not sure where or how to start?

The Semiahmoo Seniors Planning committee – hosted by Sources Community Resources – may be your answer. This committee is dedicated to improving the lives of seniors on the Peninsula by raising the awareness of key issues that seniors face on health, safety and socialization.

We meet once a month on the first Wednesday of each month; for more information, email semiahmooseniors@gmail.com or call 604-542-4357.

This committee also participates in intergenerational projects and along with Sources will be involved with the Intergenerational Café, which will be a part of the new expansion at SSRC.

• Healthy Hearts Family Day is happening here at SSRC on Feb. 10, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Join us with your family, grandchildren, aunts and uncles for something new, like Zumba, yoga, hip hop, and pickleball.

Register your family to ensure your spot with # 4361674, at 604-592-6970.

Stay happy and healthy through fitness and see you at the Rec Centre.
