Activities promote good health, vitality

March into spring at the South Surrey Recreation Centre.

Februum, the Latin word for February, meaning ‘purification,’ is a fitting definition for the modern day heart month – the month to take charge of your physical and emotional heart.

Here at South Surrey Recreation Centre, we have had a very busy ‘heart’ month, with Chinese New Year activities both with the preschools and the seniors, celebrating the Year of the Rabbit.

Along with Valentine’s Day for the emotional heart and our mini health fair for your physical heart, February was packed full with information, friendship and fitness.

And, as we roll into March, there are lots of activities happening to keep your blood pumping.

n South Surrey Rec Centre will host the City of Surrey’s Focus on Seniors Forum on Saturday, March 5, 9-3 p.m.

This informative day is free and includes a nutritious lunch, great prizes and a chance to win a city-wide seniors’ services membership.

This forum is a part of our series for seniors and their caregivers.

It will provide awareness of issues that impact seniors on a daily basis, as well as valuable information surrounding legal, safety and support resources that are available to seniors and their caregivers here in Surrey.

Please join us by registering at 604-501-5100 (cite registration number 4244437) or in person at the rec centre.

n Our next adventure with Enjoy Bus Tours will be Tuesday, March 7, where participants will be heading down to the Silver Reef Casino and the Tulalip Casino.

The tour includes a buffet lunch and optional outlet mall shopping.

You won’t want to miss this day of fun at two of Washington State’s premiere casinos, along with four hours of free time.

The bus leaves from either South Surrey Rec Centre or the Cloverdale Senior’s Centre, at a cost of $45 for members and $50 for non-members.

Register with course number 4232900 in person at either centre or over the phone.

n On Thursday, March 17, the rec centre will host the City of Surrey Healthy Starts Breakfast in recognition of March as National Nutrition Month.

Please drop by and pick up some healthy breakfast snacks, nutrition information and recipes.

This healthy and delicious breakfast is offered from 9-10:30 a.m., so mark your calendar.

n Families, gather up your kids’ stuff and register for our first ever “Kids Stuff Swap Meet” on Saturday, March 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A vendor table costs only $16 with additional tables for $10, and the day is free to shoppers.

Our small gym will be set up with a bouncy castle and play toys for the kids, and there will be a Scholastic Book Fair open to the public that starts on Thursday, March 17.

This is also a great time for grandmas and grandpas to shop for their grandchildren.

Book your table by registering with  number 4236566 at 604-592-6970, or just come by on the day for some great deals!

n Friday, March 25 is our next foot-care clinic, starting at 9 a.m., with two nurses.

If it is time for your followup appointment, or if you need to have your first assessment, contact our staff at 604-592-6970 to arrange your appointment.

n The new Spring Leisure Guide will be available at the rec centre by March 1, so pick your copy up and start your spring fitness plans.

Strive to keep active and healthy mind and let us assist you with achieving your goals.

See you at the centre.
