ALEX HOUSE: Lots of summer fun planned

There are a number of activities available at Alex House this summer, writes columnist Donni Klassen

An exciting summer is unfolding at Alex House.

On Tuesday afternoons, from 1:30-4 p.m., drop in for Summer Blast, family fun that that will go ahead rain or shine.

Different activities are planned each week from beach art to kite flying to an ice-cream social. It’s a great opportunity to meet your neighbours and have some fun.

• Drop in every Wednesday evening for Community Fun nights.

All ages are welcome and activities will include two movie nights under the stars, family olympics, a beach party picnic, a scavenger hunt, a garden party, a barbeque – and lots more.

Go to our website at www.alexhouse.net for a schedule and all the details.

• It began with an idea.

Then was followed by cardboard boxes, then some donated sawdust, followed by an army of gardeners spanning three generations, eight hours, many wheelbarrows, a lot of dirt, some lumber and some collective muscle and blisters.

And at the end of the day, Alexandra Community Garden was created.

More than 45 community volunteers collectively put in at least 500 hours of volunteer time at 11 planning meetings, two garden work parties and one open house – all since March 27.

What an amazing accomplishment.

Our community gardeners will be out and about this summer, hosting some community activities in the Alexandra Park garden. Visit them Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings during the summer.

• If you have an artistic streak, or a creative talent you’d like to share with your neighbours, help us make our community garden an inspiring gathering place where people can sit, relax, connect and explore.

Ideas so far include working with neighbours to create a driftwood archway, mosaic stepping stones, benches and seating, bird bath and houses, gazebo/shade area and hand carved signs.

Call 604-535-0015 ext 236 to make your vision a reality.

• We’re planning our second annual Starry Night Fundraiser, complete with a blank canvas, paints and wine and cheese, not necessarily in that order.

Six months after last summer’s event, people were still talking about it, so watch our website and Facebook page for all the details.

And remember to check them often over the summer for updates on all our activities!
