For the past eight years, Vernon residents have looked forward to the Investors Group Walk for Memories the last Sunday in January as a time to walk or skate, take in some entertainment, and raise money for a good cause.

The walk raises money and awareness for the Alzheimer Society of B.C. to help people affected by Alzheimer disease and other dementias and their families. Now, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is calling for volunteer leaders to help plan and coordinate the 2013 event.

“The Investors Group Walk for Memories has long been a grassroots, community-driven event,” said Jean Blake, CEO of the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

“Volunteer committees in communities around the province bring life and heart to the event, which goes a long way in aiding the fight against Alzheimer’s disease while honouring local families on the dementia journey.”

The money raised goes toward programs and services in each community and for research for a cure. In 2012, the Vernon walk raised $28,000.

Volunteers in each community take the lead in organizing the walk, promoting the event and recruiting participant teams and individuals, with training and support from the society.
