The Family Caregiver Education series of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. offers a workshop for people who are caring for someone with dementia Feb. 11 and 12.
The workshop covers basic information on dementia and its impact on individuals, caregivers, families and the community, as well as the progression of the disease and approaches for meeting challenges.
There will also be information on understanding and facilitating communication with people who have dementia and how to understand behaviour as a form of communication. There will be an exploration of strategies for determining what a person with dementia might be trying to communicate, decreasing occurrence of disturbing behaviours and responding in supportive ways.
There will be a section on planning for the future to ensure the person with dementia has their wishes honoured.
The workshop requires pre-registration of 20 people before Feb. 1 or it will be cancelled. The workshop takes place Feb. 11 and 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The People Place.
