Oceanside art lovers can expect a bargain as the McMillan Art Centre prepares for its first Art From the Heart fundraiser, featuring the work of talented local artists as well as some international artists for $50 a piece.

“There are really going to be some bargains out there because many items are probably worth more than 50 dollars,” said Ann Davies, member of the DeCosmos Fine Art Society, one of the groups who initiated the fundraiser.

Many local artists donated pieces to the show to benefit the local art centre, such as Dan Gray, Allan Dunfield, Peter Kiidumae and Maureen Walker, as well English internationally recognized miniature artist, David Weston.

Gray, who lives in Errington, said the art community often donates to these causes, creating more opportunities for tourists to experience the local art culture, ultimately helping not just artists and local art centres but the whole community.

“I think it’s very important on Vancouver Island to be seen as a place where artists live, where you can find art (and) where you can find art being made. And it doesn’t matter to me whether it’s Parksville, Errington, Qualicum Beach or Victoria.”

There will be over 100 pieces at the show, including paintings, photography, sculpture and more.

A select six pieces will be auctioned off at the opening reception on Saturday, July 2, starting at $50. A “Nifty Fifty” art sale will happen for the rest of the pieces. One dollar coupons can be purchased the week leading up to the show which will decide the order people may choose their pieces at the reception. Any remaining pieces will be available for $50 for the rest of the month-long show.

During the exhibition there will also be Saturday activities for kids from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., including making things like masks, mini puppets, and 3D creations. Demonstrations from local member groups, like the spinners and weavers, will also take place during the show. As well, there will be live music happening throughout the month.

Dave Wright, office administrator of the Oceanside Arts Council at the McMillan Art Centre, said this fundraiser comes at a much needed time for the centre.

“We’re very excited,” he said. “It’s great exposure; it’s amazing how many people don’t know about this local art gallery.”

Proceeds from the show will go back into programming at the centre for the local community, he said.

The opening reception happens July 2 at 5 p.m. where wine and cheese will be available. The exhibition runs from June 28 to July 30. The centre is located at 133 McMillan St. in Parksville.
