Manly man is the theme of the fifth annual Qualicum Beach Artisan Market that kicks off June 28 beside the Old School House Arts Centre.
Numerous husband and wife teams and male-dominated art forms such as stone carving, wood carvers, metal working, and glass artists will make up more than 30 artisans at the weekly market.
“And there won’t be any crushing of beer cans on their foreheads either,” joked QBAM organizer, Dee Aguilar. “Seriously, we have some amazing artists of both sexes, but for the first time ever we have metal workers from across the Island including Cross Heart Forge, Red Cod Forge and Jay Holbrook, not to mention world famous First Nations carver, Jeremy Humperville from Coastal Carvings, Del Mark with his amazing stone carvings, and of course, Ted Jolda, with his new series of glass beer mugs.”
Larry and Dee Aguilar won’t be the only husband and wife team at the market this year either. They will be joined by Josie and Victor Duffhues, JoVic Pottery, from Cedar, and Richard Lonsdale and Janet Moe of Two Fish Pottery.
“Richard’s pottery is collected Canada-wide. His specialty is table wear and functional art. You have to see it to believe it,” said Aguilar.
To kick off the opening on June 28 classical guitarist Fred Saliani will provide an assortment of acoustic and original songs to enjoy while visitors mingle and chat with the artists. This is a fun family event that everyone can enjoy.
And don’t worry ladies, there is still lots of bling. Wendy Maurer, glass bead artist, will be set up and numerous other jewellers, photographers, painters, as well as an up and coming young graphic artist, Shatisha Marari. The market runs every Friday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. until August 30.
