Baby, won’t you drive my car

The Oceanside Overdrive car show draws hundreds of vehicles and thousands of people to the Parksville beach. This year’s show is Sunday, July 31.

Two big car shows are being held in Oceanside this weekend, starting off Saturday with the Ocean Idlers Car Club’s Blast from the Past #15 in Coombs, followed by a Oceanside Overdrive Classic Car Cruise Saturday evening and the Oceanside Overdrive annual Show & Shine on Sunday, in Parksville.

This is the 15th annual car show put on by the Ocean Idlers Car Club, but a first for them at the Coombs Fairgrounds.

Years ago they used to put on their show at the Parksville Community Park, called “Summer Dreaming.” They stopped doing that show and eventually made their way to the French Creek Elementary School in Coombs, but this year the club is moving their event to the Coombs Fairgrounds, behind the Coombs General Store.

Jack Biickert with the club said many people come out to this show on Saturday and then catch the Oceanside Overdrive show, held in the Parksville Community Park, on the Sunday.

“There are two events that weekend in town, so people come in for that one and come in for ours, they piggyback the two.”

There were 178 cars and about 3,000 spectators at the Idlers’ event last year. Registration starts at 8 a.m. on July 30, along with a pancake breakfast, and there will be food and music all day. Trophies will be handed out about 2:30 p.m.

On Sunday, July 31, the 22nd annual Oceanside Overdrive Show & Shine will take place in Parksville and president A.J. Rose, said his club picked up the show to keep the funds coming into the community.

“The Idlers didn’t want to do it anymore and I thought it was a loss to the community, so that’s why we’re doing it,” he said.

Rose said the Overdrive show is one of the biggest on the Island with 360 cars last year and about 8,000 spectators. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and there will be food vendors, car-affiliated vendors and a D.J. playing classic car tunes throughout the day.

The car cruise Saturday evening begins at 6 p.m. at the Parksville A&W and goes throughout Parksville.
