PARKSVILLE — The Oceanside Brain Injury Society Resource Network (OBISNet) is marking Brain Injury Awareness Month this month.
As the sun finally comes out to join us, it’s very easy to get in the groove of a sunny day; people become more distracted and absent-minded when it comes to protecting our most precious organ: the brain.
So please, this summer, next summer and every other season each year, protect yourself by using this revolutionary and proven method: Common Sense.
Always wear a helmet when you’re supposed to, slow down on and off the road, use handrails on stairs, limit alcohol consumption, obey rules and guidelines especially at theme parks, water-slides, provincial parks, know the side affects of any medication you take, especially those that are sun-sensitive (those medications caution you to stand up slowly for a good reason), and take care of those odd-jobs around the house and yard that are potentially hazardous.
If something doesn’t seem safe, it probably isn’t. Trust your instincts, save your brain.
Brain injury is the number one cause of death and disability in people under the age of 45 and 90 percent of traumatic brain injuries are preventable.
If you’ve already suffered a brain injury, you have a 99 per cent chance of re-injuring yourself, so this summer, take care and be aware!
