With just one more week to go in broom-busting season, Joanne Sales is putting out the call to all able-bodied residents to follow her over the top.
The spark behind the local Broombusters campaign, Sales said a campaign to bump up the campaign against the yellow yuck picked up the pace on Saturday, with more people than ever lifting their loppers and fighting back against the noxious invader.
The second weekend in the campaign saw 20 area residents turn up at the Parksville visitor information centre, up by four bodies from the previous week.
The small army not only moved the broom front forward, it also heartened those veterans who have been on the front lines since 2006.
“We cut so much more than I thought we could cut,” Sales said. “It was very impressive. I just hope the city doesn’t get mad at us for being too successful.”
Now, she said, with only one, maybe two more weeks of cutting before the plants go to seed, Sales is hoping to swell her ranks once again.
“We need a truly massive turnout for Saturday, June 2,” she said. “I’d like to see a massive turnout next Saturday in Parksville to cut all the rest of 19A and at least the corner of Resort Road.”
The cut will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the Parksville and Island Highway Resort Road area. Park on Resort Drive behind the Esso station to gear up. Anyone who is late can just look for the Broombusters. They’ll be the ones with the loppers.
