The Cake Box Bakery, which closed its doors on the weekend, had a long history as a Summerland landmark.

It opened on Main Street in 1937 when Earl Tompson set up the bakery behind the hotel.

In 1940, it was moved to Granville Street (now Main Street) and named the Dunbar Bakery. It has remained at that location ever since.

In 1946, Jerry Hallquist purchased the bakery and reverted to the original Cake Box Bakery name.

Other owners have been the Hodgsons who purchased it in 1949, the Cosgroves who purchased it in 1970, the Woudas who acquired it in 1989 and Silvia Morf, Tony Willies and Markus Hunziker who purchased it in 1999.

Hunziker has been the sole owner since 2004.

While Cake Box is closing its doors, the location will continue to be used as a bakery.

True Grain Breads, a European-style bakery specializing in fresh, local, organic handcrafted bread, will open at the same location in spring.

Bruce Stewart, president of True Grain Bread and Todd Laidlaw, a longtime friend of Stewart, are the co-owners of the new bakery.

While True Grain Breads is new to Summerland, the company has a presence in Cowichan Bay on Vancouver Island.
