Celebrate mom with garden tour

Moms – we wouldn’t be here without them!

They bring us into this world and then nurture us and guide us through life.

Not so different for gardens.

Jim and Elfried DeWolf have been nurturing their beautiful garden, the Glades, for many years. It has grown and evolved over the years and it is a glorious spectacle in May with all the rhodos in full bloom. There is the zen garden, the bamboo grove, the sunny meadow and pond, and many paths to wander.

For parents, it is hard to see your children grow and leave the nest but you know that you have done all that you could for them.

Like good parents, Jim and Elfried knew that they had to pass on the care of their beautiful garden and very generously donated it for all the people of Surrey to enjoy for generations to come.

For the past 13 years, the Peace Arch Hospital Auxiliary Society has been hosting a Mother’s Day Tea & Tour at the Glades. It is a major fundraiser for the hospital, as well as a wonderful way for families to spend Mother’s Day.

For this year’s event, we are partnering with the City of Surrey and will once again be offering food for sale. There will be sandwich plates, dessert plates and coffee, tea and juice available to purchase and eat in the beautiful meadow overlooking the large pond.

You can sit at your bistro table, complete with tablecloth and centerpiece, and listen to live music while you take in the beauty of the gardens around you.

Before or after your lunch, you can stroll the many paths through the garden and there will be master gardeners available to answer any questions.

There will be a garden marketplace where you can purchase live plants, handmade sun-catchers, gardening books and stuffed animals.

There is also a raffle with a sculptured blue spruce, a hanging basket and a rhododendron as prizes.

It’s time for you to nurture mom and grandma and the other special women in your life. Bring them out to the Glades for a day of relaxation and some quality time with the people they love.

The gates will be open on Sunday, May 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. – $8 per person, children 10 and under are free. Rain or shine.

Debbi Anderson is president of Peace Arch Hospital Auxiliary Society.
