Cherryville carries on the rural tradition of taking care of its own with the Remembrance Day Turkey Supper Nov. 11 at the Gold Panner Campground & Cafe.

The event, featuring a full turkey meal, is a fundraiser for Cherryville Food Bank Christmas hampers.

“The hampers really make a huge impact for some families at the holidays and we want  to support that,” said Michelle Smiegielski, manager, with her husband, Mike Loewen, of the Gold Panner Campground & Cafe.

“Rick and Marilyn Potter, the owners of the cafe, came up with the idea and we have had a very positive response from the community with people saying they’d be happy to come out. We hope that people from outside the area will come out, too. It’s a family event.”

The Gold Panner is donating all the ingredients for the supper, including organic, free-range, grain-fed turkey and doing all the preparation and serving with the help of volunteers. The supper will be held in the cafe and the outdoor kitchen by the fireplace in the campground, depending on the weather.

“This is a chance for people to get together and socialize and give back. We moved here two years ago from Manitoba and we’re looking forward to getting to know people in the community better, too,” said Smiegielski.

The Remembrance Day Turkey Supper takes place Nov. 11 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Gold Panner Campground and Cafe at 423 Highway 6 in Cherryville. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12 and free for children under four. The organizers would like people who are planning to attend to let them know in advance so they know how much food to prepare. Call 250-547-2025 or 250-547-2185.
