In-demand climate change speaker hitting Island Savings Centre in June

A conservation biologist and professor from the United States is making a stop in Duncan on June 14, part of a speaking tour about climate change.

Dr. Guy McPherson, professor emeritus of natural resources from University of Arizona takes the mic at the Island Savings Centre in Duncan at 1 p.m. to convey the message that feedback loops and tipping points in the climate system are vastly increasing the rate of change, but are not being addressed in our official response policy.

He will talk about his journey from scientist and teacher to author and counter-culture activist.

"There is a groundswell of interest building in our communities, as effects of abrupt climate change can no longer be ignored," said Robyn Wagoner, spokesperson for the tour, in a press release. "Dr. McPherson is in demand as a speaker who has the courage and skill to present the facts with clarity, courage, and warm-hearted humour."

In his presentation, McPherson will present his analysis of the current climate research and his views on what we should be doing about it.

There will be a question period as well. Admission is by donation. A suggested amount is $5-$25.

Place your ‘bets’ for Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Ride-a-Thon

The Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association is Off to the Races with their annual Ride-a-Thon June 13 to 19.

This fundraiser will see program participants take to the special Ride-a-Thon course, with teams organized around each of the 13 therapy horses.

Money raised, which organizers hope will total at least $15,000, will go towards supporting the CTRA program, which provides therapeutic riding and equine-based therapeutic services for persons with disabilities. The program has hundreds of participants each year, and is run through the generosity of dedicated volunteers.

"The Ride-a-Thon provides a wonderful opportunity for participants, families, volunteers and community supports to come together in support of the life-changing opportunities made possible through CTRA’s services," said event organizers.

So how can you participate? Horse teams race to bring in the most pledges and the winning team will celebrate victory with their very own pizza party.

There will also be participation and incentive prizes along the way for individuals collecting pledges, as well as a special trophy for the top fundraiser.

A celebration picnic will wrap up the festivities on Saturday, June 20 from 2-4 p.m. at the CTRA facility at 1843 Tzouhalem Rd., Duncan. There will be food, beach volleyball and other games, a chili cook off and the grand opening of the new outdoor arena.
