Enjoy a night of African culture when The Zimbabwe Project hosts its fourth annual dinner, dessert auction and silent auction, Saturday at the Prestige Hotel.
The evening will consist of dinner hosted by Bourbon Street Bar and Grill at the Prestige Hotel, live entertainment by Nankama World Beat Interactive with Bobby Bovenzi, who will also host a live drumming circle, and the opportunity to bid on some of the yummiest desserts imaginable, as well as the many fabulous silent auction items, which have been generously donated by local businesses and individuals, said Angela Yablonski, owner of Vernon’s Curves and founder of the Zimbabwe Project.
“It promises to be an interesting and fun evening and we would like to invite the community to join us.”
The Zimbabwe Project is a local grass roots organization that raises funds to support the start up of self-sustaining projects in Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe, in the southern part of the continent, is one of Africa’s poorest nations with an unemployment rate of more than 90 per cent and the world’s highest number of AIDS orphans.
“Most of these orphans are supported at a subsistence level by extended family members or other members of their village, but this is an extremely difficult undertaking for them as the extreme poverty makes it difficult for them to feed their own children,” said Yablonski.
The Zimbabwe Project holds a number of fundraising activities throughout the year to provide assistance to the Zimbabweans. The dinner, dessert and silent auction is one of the group’s biggest events.
Doors to the event open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. followed by the dessert auction. The silent auction carries on throughout the evening. Tickets are $20 each and are available at Curves on 27th Street.
