Rocky Mountain Buffalo Ranch is open for business. Everyday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. people are welcomed for guided buffalo tours.
Leo Downey along with his wife Karen, moved to Golden in 1998 after falling in love with the area. Their home in the Blaeberry was already occupied by a buffalo farm, an added bonus for Leo.
“I wanted to live somewhere where I could feed myself and be more self sufficient. Before moving here I was a musician in California and so it was a big change.”
Leo says that it took no time at all for his family to fall in love with the animals and wish to learn more about their difficult history and personalities.
Before Europeans inhabited Canada, millions of buffalo roamed the land. After coming very close to extinction, now a growing population of about 500,000 can be found, most of which are on private ranches.
The Rocky Mountain Buffalo Ranch gives you a first hand look at these beautiful creatures which, although living on a ranch, live much like those found in the wild. The Downeys work hard to make sure their buffalo are content and keep their natural instincts. They want to give those on tours a personal look into the buffalo. Says Leo, “I really enjoy sharing the buffalo with visitors. There is a lot you can learn here that you won’t find in a book.”
The buffalo tours are $12 for adults, $5 for children and those under four are free. Along with daily buffalo tours, there will be buffalo burgers and a growing gift shop that is focusing on the works of local artists.
