Echoes from the Past: John Green captured by Sasquatch in ’61 parade

The following events took place 50 years in Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs

50 Years Ago, 1961

• The 1961 Fall Fair Parade was hailed as a great success.  A highlight of the parade was the capture of Sasquatch hunter John Green by the Sasquatch. Numerous floats from neighbouring communities of Hope, Haney and Chilliwack added to the long and colourful parade.

• The Harrison Hot Springs Council made the final payment on the $25,000 borrowed ten years previously to build the dyke. The Village declared itself free of direct debt, owing no money other than the school district debt.

• The top dairy producers for the month of September were Jake Hoogendoorn for high herd average, Barrie Peterson for top cow, and Walter Bartel for high heifer.

• The seven graduates of Agassiz High School were to be honoured at an awards ceremony in September, not June as is the present practice. Scholarship, sportsmanship and academic achievement awards were to be presented. Dorothy Quiring, Sharon Davies, Lynn Korstad, Diane Reambeault, and Jean MacPherson attained University Entrance standing and Sharon Striker and Victor Hryhirchuk graduated on the General Program.

• The Valley Dart League kicked off the season with a tournament at the Elk’s Hall, featuring competitions between men and ladies singles, doubles and mixed doubles. At stake was the Labatts trophy.

• In the “How things change department”: In 1961, a large, three bedroom home on West Pioneer was offered for rent at $65 a month.
