A world of fantasy will be unveiled at an art show opening for the work of Joni Young at Jita’s Café in Golden on May 25 from 5-8 p.m.
Young has been a painter for 16 years and credits a long line of artists in her family who inspired her passion over the years.
“I have always loved art. My mom is an artist and many people in my family are artistic. I have just always been doing it,” she said.
“My mom is the portrait artist in the family and my daughter seems to be following in her footsteps. My sisters are also very artistic along with my uncle and many other people.”
Young is a well known art teacher in Golden, who works with both children and adults.
“My work is known for being colourful. I am sure that’s what everyone else would say as well. I am well known for my use of colour but I also do black and white paintings.”
Young has used her talents to paint 12 murals around Golden including a fantasy piece at the library in Golden. She said the fantasy theme will be evident in the works on display at the upcoming show.
“With this show I really wanted to do dreamy, fantasy scenes. I did not look at any pictures and just wanted to see what would happen with no plans on what I would paint.”
Although this was a painting style Young had never tried before, she said it was a process she enjoyed trying.
“I lose myself in it. I love it and it is how I express myself. Especially with these fantasy ones that I have been doing. I wake up in the middle of the night with the ideas of images. I then incorporate them into a painting the following day.”
Young said she also wanted to have an event that people of all ages could enjoy.
“This is something for everyone. I am encouraging families to bring their kids,” she said. “I really like the vibe at Jita’s. I like the food and energy. She is always showcasing artists in there,” she said.
