The Keremeos art gathering at the Gibson House has grown into an active and busy visual arts group which has adopted the name Similkameen Art and Soul (SAS). This name was selected to reflect the participants’ pride in their home valley and to also express their dedication to continuous learning and growing in practicing their arts.
Who has attended so far? We have small business owners, service personnel, farmers, and retirees, all who are art lovers that want the challenge of growing their inner artist in a group setting. If you live in the valley, SAS invites you to come and participate. We believe that everyone can make art.
The first rule of SAS is “enjoy the process” and the second rule is “low cost”; in keeping with our “not for profit” philosophy. Attend any of the art drop-ins and you will see folks laughing, chatting, and teaching one another different art methods with mutual energy and support. Around the room you might encounter charcoal drawings, pen and ink sketches, collages, brilliant encaustics, stunning sculptures, and acrylic abstracts and landscape paintings. A sharing table groaning with donated items (thanks to Marie who recently donated all those beautiful seashells and ephemera) is also a feature where members are encouraged to both take and donate. Other activities such as the art box challenge and art trading cards are voluntary and can awaken the creative juices. This artful group meets alternate Sundays at Gibson House from 1 p.m to 3 p.m. For dates and more detailed information contact Judy Chisholm at 499-2883.
