This summer, leave the modern world behind and step into the past to experience the life of a local pioneer with the Museum at Campbell River.
On two Fridays this summer the museum is hosting interactive tours through the pioneer cabin and float house galleries, led by university summer students.
You can fully immerse yourself as you begin the tour by putting on vintage costumes and turning off all your electronics. Soon you will find yourself in a rugged, West Coast log cabin learning about the hardy lifestyle and riveting adventures of the first European settlers to this region. See and touch pioneer artifacts, then write an old-fashioned postcard to a Campbell River pioneer and send it away in anticipation of a response.
On these dates there will also be the opportunity to gain rare entrance into the museum’s replica float-house, the sort of portable home that dotted the coast in the pioneer days.
Hear about the rustic lives of the residents and try your hand at all types of antique toys, tools, and more.
Finally, there will be some snacks available that were common in the pioneer days.
“Pioneer Life is an exciting opportunity to go back in time and see Campbell River as it was over a hundred years ago,” says student tour guide Russell Demerse. “History comes alive in a whole different way when you’re experiencing it in this way.”
Pioneer Life is part of the museum’s Fun Fridays program and will take place at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on July 22 and August 19. The tour is included with the price of admission.
