The Golden Museum is getting ready for another summer of fun activities for local children with preparations happening for this year’s History Camps.
The camps will happen over a six week period and give participants the chance to have fun while looking back at the history of Golden.
Colleen Palumbo is the executive director of the Golden Museum. She feels the camps are a wonderful chance for local children to enjoy their summer.
“We will be doing six weeks of summer camps for kids. The camps run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday to Friday,” she said.
“It is a fun camp. I think the kids are learning a lot about how things were done 100 years ago…There are lots of ways to be active while they are here. We do all kinds of races and keep them busy all day.”
She added one of the highlights of the previous camps will be returning again this year.
“We will continue this year with our theme of communication. We will be making silent films every week. On the last day of camp which will once again be shown at the Golden Cinema,” she said. “We could not do this program without the cooperation of the folks at the theatre. They have been amazing to us. They literally stop what they are doing on a Friday afternoon and cater to our little groups of kids.”
Palumbo explained that again this year there will be spots in the camp for low income families.
“We do offer 50 per cent of our spaces to low income families. The camp for those children is 100 per cent subsidized if they meet the criteria. We do not want to see anybody not be able to come to camp,” she said. “We will work with families to make this possible.”
Currently the museum is looking for two people to help run the camps this year.
“We are looking to get two candidates to take on the job of the summer camps and I encourage all young people to try for it. The camp starts in the last week of June and we can work around graduation ceremonies.”
People can drop by the Golden Museum at 1302 11th Ave. South to learn more about the camps and the opportunity for their children to have fun and make friends over the summer.
