The Graduate Wardrobe is hosting a public dress sale of discounted formal wear on Sunday, Feb. 26 in Abbotsford.

Carolyn Burgh believes that prom should be an exciting experience for all high school graduates, regardless of their financial situation.

That’s why for the third year in a row, the Chilliwack resident is running The Graduate Wardrobe (formerly Fraser Valley Dress Sale), a program that provides affordable formal wear to graduates from Langley east to Hope.

Partnering with various school districts, the program allows students facing financial stress, who are referred by their school counsellors, to pick out a dress or suit for prom.

The students can then have their hair and makeup done, and a professional photo taken, which will be framed and delivered to their school counsellor.

“I want to make sure everyone has the same opportunity, whether their parents can afford it or not,” Burgh said.

“Everybody has gone through high school, some have had more challenges than others, and then unfortunately, some of the those girls that have had more challenges don’t get to experience the prom day the same as the girls that haven’t had challenges.”

This year’s event takes place in Abbotsford on Saturday, Feb. 25, followed by a public dress sale on Sunday, Feb. 26.

While the Saturday event is for referred students only, the Sunday sale is open to everyone from age 10 to 100.

There will be all kinds of new and gently used formal wear available for a variety events from graduation to Christmas parties.

Ballgowns are $30; all other dresses, skirts and tops are $10; suits are $10 each piece; purses, shoes and jewelry are $2 each.

Those who would like to donate items can do so by emailing info@thegraduatewardrobe.com.

Clothing donations will not be accepted during the two events.

The public sale is cash only and takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Quality Hotel and Conference Centre, 36035 North Parallel Rd. in Abbotsford.
