Mission’s story on the development of communication systems dates back to the 19th century following the invention of useable electricity, steel, and petroleum products which lead to a faster and wider means to communicate.
Events being held at the Mission Community Archives Feb. 21 will reveal how these systems have influenced, changed, and shaped the community’s history.
At 4 p.m., the Heritage Places Branch will be showcasing properties on its website that reflect the history of communication in Mission, like The Record newspaper office and the Mission post office. These and other profiles of historic sites can be viewed at www.missiondhs.com/heritageplaces.
Following this presentation, the Mission Community Archives will open its new exhibit titled Making [kuh-nek-shuns]. It tells the stories behind the introduction and development of local postal and telephone services, local newspapers, television, and modern technology, including how in 1927 Mission became one of the smallest towns to have its own broadcasting station.
