Wildlife artist Robert Bateman to hold art teaching/seminar Saturday at Young at Art Studio in Qualicum Bay.

  • Nov. 24, 2015 8:00 p.m.

Qualicum Bay’s Young at Art Studio will host Canadian artist and icon Robert Bateman in an art teaching/seminar session this Saturday, Nov. 28.

Bateman, an Officer of the Order of Canada and holder of the Order of British Columbia, has been a keen wildlife artist and naturalist from his early days. He has always painted wildlife and nature, beginning with a representational style, moving through impressionism and cubism to abstract expressionism.

In his early 30s Bateman moved back to realism as a more suitable way to express the particularity of the planet. It is this style that has made him one of the foremost artists in his genre.

His honours, awards and honorary doctorates are numerous: in addition to the Order of Canada and Order of British Columbia, Bateman has been given the Rachel Carson Award (1996); the Golden Plate from the American Academy of Achievement (1998); the Human Rights Defender Award from Amnesty International (2007); and was named one of the 20th Century’s Champions of Conservation by the U.S. National Audubon Society (1998).

Bateman will be critiquing artists’ work, as time permits. Attendees are invited to bring along a piece of artwork, if they would like him to critique it, and learn about art as Bateman talks about his lifelong passion.

The seminar will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lighthouse Community Centre, 240 Lions Way, Qualicum Bay. Cost is $99 (plus GST); pre-registration and additional info is available online at youngatart.ca.
