Sound the alarm! All wannabe firefighters report to the Greater Vernon Museum & Archives for Junior Firefighter Fun Day next weekend.

Sponsored by the Fairfield Inn & Suites, this action-packed family event on May 7 is in celebration of the Vernon Fire Department’s 125th anniversary and will have the museum hopping with activity, both inside and out!

Learn about the early history of the Vernon Fire Brigade and the Fire Brigade Band in our exhibit featuring early firefighting gear, fire brigade band uniforms, photos, stories and architectural plans for the 1903 and 1911 fire halls. Check in on the daily routine of the 1950s Vernon Fire Department firefighters, on and off duty, as recorded at the time. Take part in our firefighter scavenger hunt. Those who find the hidden firefighter figurine can enter a draw for a gift basket, graciously donated by Vernon Teach & Learn.

Firefighter games, crafts and activities for the kids will be featured outside as well, including a dalmatian bouncy castle courtesy of Bounce Hire and face painting by Serena Phelan. As well, the Vernon Fire Department will have several antique fire trucks on display outside the museum.

And the Vernon Fire Department will be hosting an open house the same day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Vernon Fire Hall.

Fun activities for the kids are planned, in addition to an antique fire apparatus display, fire bell restoration project, photo gallery and a barbecue provided by the Lions Club.

The museum encourages everyone to make time to take in the festivities at both venues.

Junior Firefighter Fun Day takes place May 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the museum, 3002-32nd Ave., between the old library and the post office. Admission is by donation.
