Local apples given public juicing

Bring a minimum of 150 pounds of your own apples and see them turned into juice right before your eyes.

Bylands Garden Centre (1600 Byland Rd. in West Kelowna) and the Mobile Juice Factory will host a public juicing event on Saturday, Oct. 4, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The public is invited to bring a minimum of 150 pounds of their apples which will be turned into juice right before their eyes.

This volume of apples will create about nine five-litre boxes of juice.

The bag-in-box juice has an unrefrigerated shelf life of up to one year unopened, and up to three months after opening.

“When we were approached about hosting a public juicing event, we thought it was so beneficial. We know from the number of apple trees we sell every year, that many people grow them. Juicing is such a practical solution, rather than letting apples rot on the tree or the ground,” said Maria Byland, owner of Bylands Garden Centre.

According to Dorothy Hamilton, with the Mobile Juice Factory, “The concept is based on popular public juicing events in Germany. It is a seasonal tradition when neighbours get together with their apples for juicing. They enjoy their own juice throughout the year. If the event is popular this year, we envision it becoming an annual event.”

The public may bring their minimum 150 pounds of clean apples in buckets, bags or buckets. 150 pounds may seem like a lot, but get together with a neighbour or friend and you’ll be surprised how quickly you come up with 150 pounds.

Customers will have their apples pressed on a first come, first served basis. The fee for juicing is $6.75 per 5 litre box.
