Surrey’s Dianna Dai recently competed against more than 100 of Canada’s top shots in Gimli, Manitoba.

From May 3-6, she participated in the National Cadet Marksmanship Championship, which included 125 competitors from across the country.

Dai, 14, is a corporal with 907 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron. She has been shooting for one year and is competing with her team.

Since last fall, Dai and her teammates participated in a series of local competitions that culminated in the provincial / territorial competition this spring. Their combined team scores qualified them to represent British Columbia at the 42nd National Cadet Marksmanship Championship.

The Sea, Army and Air cadets also took part in cultural activities that featured an astronomy study and a visit to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg. Other activities included drop-in movies and informal sports.

The cadet marksmanship program is based on Olympic-style competition and designed for youth and with a focus on shooting as a recreational sport. About 20,000 cadets participate in this challenging and fun activity every year.

The Canadian Cadet Organization is comprised of more than 52,000 young people across Canada. Cadets participate in structured activities to develop positive habits in fitness, leadership and citizenship in a challenging yet fun environment.
