Honeymoon Bay volunteer Jocelyn Lundberg plans on bringing as much money with her as possible when she goes to Mozambique, Africa, at the end of July. During her trip, Lundberg will be part of the first group of Canadian volunteers to help out with the Habitat for Humanity’s first Orphans and Vulnerable Children program. The program strives to provide shelter for children who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Although she’s never built a house before, Lundberg said that she became interested in the program because of her aspirations of going into pediatric occupational therapy. As such, the project ties into her interests. “They say no experience is necessary,” she said. “I always like looking for new projects, and this just struck a chord.” She’d mulled over the decision for a couple of weeks, and ultimately decided that if she doesn’t go now, she may never go. “My parents are very supportive,” she said, of her volunteering plans. In September, she hopes to enroll at the Northridge Health Performance Centre, to begin her career in pediatrics. But first, in order to make the greatest difference with her trip to Mozambique, she hopes to bring as much money with her as possible, to help out the country’s children. “If you are willing and able to make a donation, every penny will help us build these children a safe place to live,” she wrote in a statement she’s prepared. “All funds raised will go directly toward contractor and volunteer fees, and the cost of building materials.” Some examples of donations she provided are; • $10 = a box of nails • $35 = roof shingles • $50 = low flow toilet • $75 = window • $100 = kitchen sink • $150 = front door Lundberg has set up donation boxes at Lake Cowichan’s Link Salon & Spa and Curves. She’s also created a Facebook page on the internet, named “Jocelyn’s Global Village trip to Mozambique.” Alternatively, she can be contacted at 749-6153, before her scheduled July 31 departure for Mozambique.
