Local Wiccan celebrates book release

Vernon business owner and Wiccan practitioner Sable Aradia (Diane Morrison) releases her new book, The Witch’s Eight Paths of Power.

Vernon business owner and Wiccan practitioner Sable Aradia (Diane Morrison) always knew she wanted to be a writer.

Witchcraft was something she discovered as a teenager.

“It felt like coming home,” said Morrison, otherwise known as Lady Sable Aradia to people in the metaphysical community and now as her pen name.

“Intuitive beliefs that I had felt all my life suddenly had a name.”

Wicca is a pantheistic religious path that believes in the sacredness of nature. Wiccan practitioners, often known as witches, believe that they can influence the world around them through the force of their will.

“Other people call it creative visualization, the power of positive thinking or the law of attraction. Witches call it magic,” said Sable.

The born and raised Vernonite was so committed to her path that she became a legally-recognized Wiccan minister and opened a metaphysical store (The Threads that Bind Us) in Vernon.

Her husband’s near-fatal car accident almost destroyed all of that.

“But in many ways it was a catalyst,” said Sable. “I learned that life was too short to delay your dreams, so I started writing again, which I hadn’t done since high school.”

In 2009, Morrison started work on what would become her first book, The Witch’s Eight Paths of Power. She submitted it to Red Wheel/Weiser, a major New York metaphysical book publisher, in 2012.

“I wanted them because they had both an excellent reputation and a wide distribution,” she said, adding she expected to collect a few rejection slips.

She didn’t.

“It’s kind of like being struck by lightning, but they snapped it up right away.”

Sable will be celebrating The Witch’s Eight Paths of Power’s Sept. 1 release with a book tour, beginning at Expressions of Time bookstore in downtown Vernon Aug. 29, concurrent with the Avenue Market that evening.

“I read tarot there now, so it was the logical place to do it,” she said.

Sable will be appearing in several other venues throughout the Okanagan and Western Canada through September and October, including the Gypsy Bazaar in Enderby, Mosaic Books in Kelowna, and White Lioness Metaphysical in Penticton; as well the Earth Spirit Festival in the Kootenays, and bookstores in Nelson, Cranbrook, Vancouver, Nanaimo, Victoria, Edmonton, Red Deer, Regina, and Winnipeg.

The Witch’s Eight Paths of Power is available for pre-order now on Amazon, Indigo.ca, Barnes & Noble and Google Books, or you can pre-order it at Coles, Chapters, or any bookstore at which she is appearing.
