Opportunity.
That’s the first word that comes to mind for the head of Nanaimo’s Economic Development Corporation when he considers the new luxury hotels slated for downtown Nanaimo.
“I think there’s significant opportunity for a host of different facets, for local entrepreneurs,” said Sasha Angus, chief executive officer of economic development, pointing to the direct impact of the hotels and their visitors on retail, restaurants and real estate.
“There’s no saying before they are an investor, everybody is a visitor.”
Two multi-million dollar hotels are proposed to be built on long-vacant lots in the heart of Nanaimo.
SSS Manhao has announced the construction phase for a 21-storey $50-million conference centre hotel on Gordon Street, which is anticipated to get underway in October. The company has not yet filed necessary paperwork for a building permit, but “basically it’s any time that this thing could get issued,” according to Tom Weinreich, the city’s manager of building inspections.
Designs for the hotel show connecting tunnels to Piper Park and the conference centre, a swimming pool and 14 commercial units. It’s also expected to draw 70,000 Chinese tourists each year.
Along the waterfront, InSight Holdings is proposing to build a $100-million and 35-storey Hilton hotel which would bank on Asian tourists to help fill rooms. The Front Street project is currently in the rezoning process, which could require the company to contribute more than $1 million toward Maffeo Sutton Park improvements. It’s also looking to lease Georgia Park to build out amenities, an issue the electorate will eventually help decide.
Angus isn’t convinced the projects will mean change for authentic features in Nanaimo, like its natural beauty which visitors want to experience, but says the hope is the hotels will provide new retail demand and construction opportunities for local trades.
“I don’t see them changing the fabric of the community; hopefully they will be a wonderful addition,” he said.
