Jack and Viktoria Maguire (Prokhorova) were married July 17, 2010 in downtown Toronto, Ont., on the top floor of the Gardner Museum. Jack is the son of John and Dagmar Maguire of Vernon, and Vika is the daughter of Vladimir Prokhorov, and Alla and Steve Galaxidas, all from Toronto.
Jack’s wedding party included great friends Mike Tedesco as best man, Quinn Newcomb and Shannon Barnett. Viktoria’s maid of honour was Zahara Ziaie Moayyed, and her bridesmaids were Karen Connor and Carol Krause.
The non-denominational ceremony included the following: Shakespeare’s Sonnet number 116 (read by Thea Gray in English and Anna Byvalseva in Russian); a reading from The Prophet, by Kahlil Gibran (read by Zahara Ziaie Moayyed); section 5 of the introduction from the decision of the Ontario Court of Appeal holding that the definition of marriage as solely a union between a man and a woman to be contrary to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (read by Thea Pheasey and Kate Maguire).
As the venue had mostly glass walls, guests could see the Toronto skyline sparkling back at them in the evening during dinner and dancing. Jack and Vika ended the evening by cutting a watermelon with a blessing from Quinn Newcomb in Latin, using a family silver dagger that had been used before, at the wedding of Jack’s parents and grandparents. They spent their honeymoon in New York City, with the hopes of a trip to Italy in the future. The happy couple continues to live and work in Toronto.
