If you are you feeling that there must be more to the holidays than more, more, more, SENS (Sustainable Environment Network Society) would like to invite you to slow down, take a step away from the harried pace of the holidays and come to Handmade Holiday Nov. 19.
This free family-friendly event is in its fifth year and growing each year. Our wonderful and creative volunteers (individuals and community groups) demonstrate making a wide variety of handmade gifts in the hopes of inspiring our community to try their hand at making handmade gifts this holiday season.
There will also be volunteers providing hands-on crafting opportunities for children so that they may learn how to make something handmade and then take it home with them. The holidays are a wonderful time to craft and share skills with children. We encourage repurposing items or using things from nature in many of our crafts and have, in past years, helped children make greenery swags to take home; recycled glass jars and made them into lovely candle holders trimmed with bits of greenery, raffia and pinecones; created little toy animals from felted wool sweaters and sewn sachets with homegrown lavender and scraps of pretty fabric.
We are so pleased to have Kalamalka Weavers and Spinners returning this year to do demonstrations as well as a children’s craft. Okanagan Regional Library will be there again with loads of crafting books to check out, so be sure to bring your library card. Okanagan Science Centre is joining us this year with and we are excited to have the Vernon Lapidary & Mineral Club taking part this year.
We’ll have woodworking, sewing, decoupage, food gifts, basket making, knitting demonstrations and much more! Another fun part of this event is that the Schubert Centre volunteers open the thrift store so that everyone can go and check out all the goodies they have for sale there and perhaps even find some crafting supplies to get started on their own projects at home. Schubert Centre’s café will also be open with soup, sandwiches, coffee and tea available for purchase.
We hope you will join us for Handmade Holiday Nov. 19 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Schubert Centre. For more information please see www.facebook.com/events/1769612966620898/ or contact Heather at idiggoodfood@gmail.com
