The District of Mission has declared April 27 as Daffodil Day in support of the Canadian Cancer Society’s annual campaign supporting the fight against cancer.
Mission is the fourth Fraser Valley city to join this movement.
“The fact is two in five Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and one in four will die,” said Mission CCS spokesman Jimmy Logan. “We have all been touched by cancer. That is why we are asking British Columbians to join our fight.”
The mayor is encouraging residents to show their support and wear a daffodil pin.
The campaign was piloted in B.C. in 2010 and this year it is being launched nationally. Last year more than 400,000 British Columbians wore the daffodil pin. This year the Society hopes to triple that number in B.C.
Donations for every pin go toward support services including programs for individuals seeking cancer information, emotional a support and camps for youth and families. The society also provides transportation services and lodge accommodations along with limited, short-term financial assistance for treatment-related transportation and accommodation. Volunteers and staff deliver cancer support programs, cancer prevention information and advocate for healthier communities and fundraise for cancer research.
