Westland Insurance began back in 1980 operating out of an office in the Lower Mainland community of Ladner with a mission to create a tradition of excellent customer service and high quality insurance products at a competitive price.
In the three decades since, Westland has expanded into 60 branch offices across the province and in Calgary, including the firm’s location in Mission Shopping Centre.
Today, Westland is one of the largest independent insurance brockerages, B.C. owned and operated.
Wendy Weller, manager of the Westland office in the Mission Shopping Centre, said the genesis of the office originally began as an insurance office for Prospera Credit Union in the shopping centre.
“We opened the office in the Prospera branch in 2003 and we were acquired and moved to our current location next to the liquor store by Westland in 2011,” Weller said.
She said Westland offers insurance options for all vehicles and homes, and the company has developed group insurance programs for commercial, institution and industrial clients that includes schools, wineries, churches, private health care facilities, dry cleaners, restaurants and manufacturers.
She said the Mission branch has flourished since moving across the parking lot under the Westland company banner, has many people didn’trealize an insurance outlet existed within the Prospera branch, which most people associate with banking services.

Hansen Pizza
Mark Hansen has worked in the kitchens of many local restaurants in Kelowna during his culinary career, but none have given him the personal satisfaction and identity in the community as the past four years operating his Hansen’s Classic Pizza outlet in the Mission Shopping Centre.
“Many people pass me on the street and say, ‘Heh, you’re the pizza guy. How’s it going'” he laughs, saying that kind of attention alluded him in the past.
“I wishing now that I had done this 20 years ago.”
When Hansen asks you if you like pickles on you pizza, it is a clue that the Hansen’s Classic Pizza menu is unlike what you might find in other local pizzerias.
Some of his pizza options include Sheppard’s Pie, Fugazetta, The Bulldog with jalapeno peppers, coconut curry chicken and The Quesadilla.
Hansen said he is fortunate that the previous pizza outlet that operated in his space added some renovations to the store after buying it from another pizza shop owner, so when Hansen bought the business he was off to a running start.
“I am selling more pizzas in a week than the previous owners sold in a month,” Hansen said.
So if you walk by the Hansen Specialty Pizza storefront window and see Hansen laughing and smiling, busily working away with another of his pizza creations, don’t be surprised because as he has come to learn, everyone loves the pizza guy.
