The young and the young at heart came out in droves to sharpen their superhero skills Feb. 8 at the Greater Vernon Museum & Archives.
Participants made their way through four stations that tested their agility, creativity, balance and problem-solving skills. Those who used their super sleuth skills to find all three of our superheroes hidden throughout the museum walked away with their very own piece of “kryptonite,” more commonly known as “fools gold” or Iron Pyrite.
Cody Grams used his superhero eyes to guess the exact number of goodies in the jar, taking home the jar of goodies to enjoy. The winner of our Superhero Prize Pack was Cisko Hove. His name was drawn from those who completed all four stations in our training camp. Congratulations to all who participated!
A last-minute addition to our festivities was a handmade kryptonite machine built by volunteer Garry Garbutt. If the two magnets were positioned just right the kryptonite glowed green, much to the delight of the kids. Thanks to our archivist, Barbara Bell, children also learned a bit about one of our local heroes, Capt. Thomas Shorts, while exploring the museum. Curator Ron Candy put together a vintage comic book display that was a hit with all ages. If you didn’t make it out on Saturday you still have until March 1 to view this temporary exhibit.
Event and education coordinator Jennifer Ng received numerous positive comments about the event including, “This is amazing! Do you do this every year?” While the Superhero theme was a first for the museum, it does host a number of children’s events throughout the year. The Bug Guys will once again be bringing their bugs and reptiles to the museum this summer, and plans are being made for our annual Halloween Bash.
