Sun Peaks officials are elated with WestJet Encore’s announcement to commence non-stop service between Kamloops and Edmonton in the 2014/15 ski season.
“Alberta is a growing market for Sun Peaks in both the winter and the summer months,” explains Christopher Nicolson, President, Tourism Sun Peaks. “Seventy per cent of our Alberta guests already come from the northern half of the province. This flight will dramatically increase our ability to attract new Alberta guests to the resort.”
The lack of a non-stop flight to Edmonton has been a significant challenge to growing the market for Sun Peaks and has been the primary ask in airline presentations. “Sun Peaks has been active in the market for many years, but were limited by the nine hour drive,” continues Nicolson. “This flight allows a person to leave Edmonton and be on the slopes in just over two hours.”
The new service also fulfills Sun Peaks and Kamloops hopes that WestJet’s strategic decision to initiate Encore would help increase service. Encore’s Q400 equipment opens up new route opportunities and frequency compared to the larger 737 fleet. Kamloops Airport Manager Fred Legace also notes that the “Q400 is an ideal aircraft for Sun Peaks and local golf courses because the cargo to passenger ratio is excellent and allows visitors to bring their skis, snowboards, and golf clubs.”
The flight is scheduled to start February 15, 2015.
