Photos celebrate ‘My Okanagan’

The public is invited to submit photos to My Okanagan Photo Contest to be used in a 2016 calendar sponsored by Grannies à Gogo

What does the Okanagan mean to you? The answer might be found in one of the four-seasons sports that abound in our splendid valley; in the sky, the hills, or the waters; or in the expressive face of a child or a weathered grandmother.

“My Okanagan” is the theme of a photo contest sponsored by Grannies à Gogo: the Vernon-South Africa Connection. Amateurs and professionals are invited to enter as many photos as they wish that reveal their individualized vision of the North Okanagan.

Recently Mary Stebbins of Vernon visited the African gogos (grandmothers) in Sabie, South Africa who are supported by Grannies  à  Gogo. She presented a slide show sharing her Okanagan, as a way to personalize the connection between the gogos in Africa and the grandmothers in Vernon. They responded enthusiastically to the sense of the people and the place of their Vernon supporters.

So now the challenge goes out to everyone to encapsulate your own version of what the Okanagan means to you. Capture your impression! The 13 winning photos will be featured in an 11×17 planning calendar for 2016. Funds raised from calendar sales and the $5 entrance fee of each photo will support AIDS-bereaved gogos in South Africa. Prizes will be awarded for the winning photos.

For details and entry forms see www.granniesagogo.com. Entry forms are also available at Sladen Moore Accounting, 3005-35th Ave., across from the RCMP detachment. Contest deadline is Oct. 1.

Susan Fenner is publicity rep for Grannies à Gogo.
