A plant sale to benefit the Summerland Ornamental Gardens is planned for this weekend.
The Friends of the Summerland Ornamental Gardens spring plant sale will be held May 12 and 13. It is the annual fund-raiser for the non-profit society.
Featured at the sale this year are Okanagan tomato varieties Summer Jet, Summer Dawn and Star Shot, all developed at the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre. Also for sale will be native plants, annuals, perennials, herbs, heirloom vegetables and drought-tolerant varieties. Local vendors will be selling their wares. A master gardeners’ tent, garden art and refreshments are also planned.
Three guest speakers are slated for Saturday. At 11 a.m. Heidi Noble of JoieFarm Winery will speak about kitchen herbs.At noon Don Gayton will talk about mason bees in the orchard. Dr. Alex Juhasz is scheduled to speak at 1 p.m. about backyard ponds.
All day Saturday the Penticton Bonsai Club will present demonstrations. Also all day Saturday information will be presented on invasive plants and what not to plant.
On Sunday, Mother’s Day, a selection of hanging flower baskets will be for sale.
The ornamental gardens are located on the grounds of the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre at Trout Creek, 4200 Highway 97 South. The entrance is across from Sun-Oka Beach Provincial Park.
