June is just chock full of gardening related events, so here is a reminder of what’s coming up:
• On June 5, at the monthly meeting of the Kelowna Garden Club, Hugh Philip will present Good Guys vs. The Bad Guys in our Okanagan Gardens. Learn to identify insects. Also learn about the Sterile Insect Release Program and its effects on the coddling moth. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Lutheran Church Hall 4091 Lakeshore Drive.
• On June 12, 7 p.m. at the Seniors Centre at1353 Richter St., the Kelowna Garden Club will have as a guest speaker Ted Baker whose topic will be The Irresistible Iris. All Garden Club members who show their membership card will be admitted free of charge. Visitors are welcome at a fee of $5.
• The Flower Power Garden Tour takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 15. This is one you just have to participate in if you want some great ideas to spruce up your own landscape. Tickets are available at all local garden centres or on line at www.flowerpowerylw.ca.
• I wrote about the Earth Wind Fire event supporting the Nature Trust of British Columbia on June 21 beginning at 6:30 p.m. This is one of Kelowna’s premier early summer events with several wineries and executive gourmet chef’s strutting their stuff all to help preserve some of the ecologically sensitive land we have in our beautiful province. • On June 22, the Kelowna Garden Club will hold its 16th annual Juried Flower Show at Guisachan Heritage Park. This is your chance to enter your favourite rose, delphinium or other gem from your garden to win acknowledgement for your efforts. Free admission for entry to the gardens and no charge for entering the juried show. • And finally if you or someone you know has a fabulous garden /landscape it can be recognized in the Communities in Bloom 2013 Green Thumb Garden Contest. There are several categories from small residential garden to large institutional landscape and everything in between. Our community is one of the best in the world and beautiful gardens and natural surroundings contribute to a wonderful lifestyle. If you haven’t tried gardening it is a great way to feed the soul.
