Are you planning on going sea kayaking? Even when enjoyed as an occasional sport, this activity cannot be improvised and requires good preparation.
• Take time before your trip to learn about the risks of navigating the waters and what is important to ensure your safety. The person who rented your kayak to you must comply with Transport Canada’s boating safety regulations.
• Check the weather forecast before you leave. Wear a bright-coloured fitted approved personal flotation device or lifejacket so you can be seen. You may want to have spare clothing in a watertight bag. Finally, bring drinking water, snacks, and sunscreen.
Guided Excursions
We recommend that you do some advance homework about the qualifications of the guide who will accompany you.
Make sure there is an emergency plan, and the group leader clearly explains what it is. Don’t hesitate to ask questions on the use of mandatory equipment, the waterway’s difficulty level and safety and navigation rules.
When the water temperature is lower than 15oC (59oF), special measures must be put in place (adapted emergency plan, appropriate equipment, etc.) to ensure that all participants are protected from hypothermia and cold-water shock in case of immersion, capsizing or falling overboard.
