A look back on what happened in the Columbia Valley over the past 50 years for the week of March 30.

50 years ago: The Lake Windermere Players presented a successful three-act mystery show titled “Arsenic and Old Lace” at the Lake Windermere Memorial Community Centre. The show consisted of a 14 actor and actress cast and was directed by Dorothy Worsley.

45 years ago: David Thompson Secondary School was accredited for the next two years. This was a notable feat for the school, as schools of its size at the time would generally only be accredited for one year, not two.

40 years ago: The “Joe Peters Night” was held at the Invermere Community Hall in celebration of Joe Peters’ continued, quality ice-making at the Invermere Curling Club. The Curling Club sponsored the event.

35 years ago: Jack Shibley, who had been driving the mail truck from Invermere to Cranbrook and back since 1939, handed over his title to another candidate. Shibley held a record of driving over 4,000 miles accident-free while operating the mail truck.

30 years ago: Del Hoffman of Invermere was the proud winner of the Rotary Club Chevette, which was the prize of the Rotary Club of Invermere’s car raffle. The raffle was a part of events at the 4th Annual Rotary Bonspiel.

25 years ago: The title of first swimmers in Lake Windermere for 1986 went to Kim Lawrick, Shelley Streicek and Natalie Purschwitz. The girls took a run into the lake from Althamer Beach in a patch of water, while the rest of the lake was still covered in ice.

20 years ago: An Easter Egg Hunt event was held at Radium Hot Springs. Over 75 participants of all ages made a mad dash, searching through trees and other hiding places, for the eggs.

15 years ago: A chimney fire set a home on Swansea Road ablaze. The Windermere Volunteer Fire Department were forced to tear through the roof of the house to deal with the blaze. No one was harmed during the ordeal.

10 years ago: The Invermere Community Hall also served as an archery range. The Invermere District Rod and Gun Club held an archery program here, for the experienced and the new to test their sharp-shooting in a disciplined and well-organized indoor range.

5 years ago: Valley resident Wilf Teneese, had spent 17 days soaking up the sun in Maui, Hawaii over his Christmas vacation. While out golfing, he had the chance to meet well-known stars Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson.
