SENIORS’ SCENE: Cooking classes on menu

Fall is full of interesting activities, including cooking classes offered by White Rock Leisure Services.

With the cooler weather comes the inclination to hunker down in the kitchen and start cooking.

White Rock Leisure Services is offering some interesting and unique classes that will help you fill your house with delicious smells.

Explore the exotic flavours of Thailand in our Thai Curries from Scratch cooking class on Oct. 10, or make seasonal soups and breads in the Soup, Chili and Quick Bread session on Oct. 12.

Life’s a slice at the Sept. 28 hands-on Pie Baking workshop; come prepared to do a taste test, plus bring home a pie for baking.

All courses are held in the Kent Street kitchen

Be sure to utilize a great free service available at Kent Street. A senior connector is at Kent Street the first Wednesday of every month.

Senior connectors bring information about housing options, medical support, government assistance and abuse awareness for seniors, their families and caregivers. They are also be available to help with application forms for OAS, GIS, and SAFER.

n Encaustic artist Jennifer Skillen explores the properties of beeswax, using colour, texture, abstraction and the addition of found objects to convey emotion, loss and human connectedness within landscapes.

Skillen’s work is currently on display at the White Rock Community Centre Gallery through Oct. 15.

Skillen will be discussing her creative and technical process – “that is, how and why I do what I do, my inspiration and a bit about the history and technique of encaustic painting” – on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 7-8:30 p.m. Register in course #25726 by phoning 604-541-2199.
