* There are a lot of day trips planned for the summer. Why not vacation in your own backyard?

Rediscover Vancouver’s Yaletown neighbourhood. The June 26 day in Yaletown includes an art walking tour along the inner shoreline followed by a visit to the local farmers market featuring fresh produce, artisan foods, baking and crafts.

Catch the matinee at the Arts Club Theatre on July 2. Red Rock Diner will take you back to 1957 where Vancouver teens come of age while DJ Red Robinson plays the biggest hits of the time. This infectious musical captures the excitement and innocence of the city’s burgeoning rock n roll scene.

Mini-bus transportation and admission are included.

• The White Rock Nordic Striders do not let rain or wind hamper their Monday/Wednesday/Friday morning walks.

Meeting at 10:15 a.m. at Centennial Park, experienced walkers who can cover five kilometres in one hour are welcome to join this intrepid group to carpool to various walk locations, rain or shine.

Call 604-541-2199 for more info.

If you prefer to stay closer to home at a slower pace, give Seniors Come Share a call at 604-531-9400 (local 203), as they are starting weekly walks around local parks for fresh weather, light fitness and great company.

• Don’t forget to drop in to the Relay for Life at Centennial Park on June 13.

Join the festival atmosphere and support and cheer the relayers who will be on the track from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. raising funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Events not to be missed include the opening Survivors’ Victory Lap that celebrates success in battling cancer and gives hope to those still facing the disease.

And don’t miss the lighting of the luminaires at twilight to provide light and inspiration all night. There will be entertainment on stage into the wee hours.

• Are you a caregiver or do you know someone caring for a person with dementia?

The Alzheimer Society of BC is presenting a four session series for caregivers to learn about dementia, practical coping strategies and early planning. Sessions are 1:30-4 p.m. starting June 10 at the Horst & Emmy Werner Centre for Active Living.

Please call 604-541-0606 for registration details.

• Caregivers can also find out more information on transition to, and life in, residential care for their loved ones at an afternoon workshop 1:30-3:30 p.m. on June 9 at the Centre for Active Living. The same workshop is also available 7-9 p.m.

Call the Alzheimer Society at 604-541-0606 for information.

• The SFU Philosophers’ Café’s next meeting at the White Rock Library is on June 11, 7-8:45 p.m.
