SENIORS’ SCENE: Plenty of ways to stay busy

White Rock Community Centre has a number of activities and programs this summer for those 55-plus.

Kent Street Activity Centre will be closed for general maintenance and cleanup from Saturday, July 18 to Monday, Aug. 3 inclusive. Regular office hours resume Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Don’t be shy, stop in at the White Rock Community Centre, 15154 Russell Ave., and check out the activities and programs at that location. There is plenty to do for those 55-plus, including drop-in contract bridge, yoga and more, or take in a new art exhibition by artist Gina Kling – Being Human. Opening reception on Thursday, July 23, 7-9 p.m. Being Human will be on display July 23-Aug. 28.

Looking for something free to do with the grandchildren on Friday (July 17)? Drop down to White Rock Elementary from 3 p.m.-7:30 p.m. and have the three- to six-year-olds take part in a bike parade and the seven- to 10-year-olds participate in a children’s bike race.

Other activities include a bouncy castle, face painting, balloon twisting an M&M Meats barbecue and much more. While enjoying this fun family event catch the sights and sounds of the Tour de White Rock Choices Markets Criterium beginning at 4 p.m.

The White Rock Business Improvement Association, in partnership with the City of White Rock, is proud to present TD Concerts at the Pier, a new, free  summer concert series on the waterfront near the White Rock Pier. With the hot, summer weather already upon us, come down to the waterfront and enjoy an outdoor art gallery. Bring your visitors down to walk the promenade from the White Rock Museum & Archives Plaza to West Beach. Meet local artists and browse fine-art displays of painting, photography and sculptures.

The Cribbage and Bid Whist group meets Thursdays from 1-3:15 p.m. all summer long at the Kent Street Centre. As well, the snooker room is open during regular centre hours. Kent Street activity groups such as these welcome beginners and experts alike; White Rock Recreation and Culture is membership required. If you are new to the area (or new to 55), pick up a guest pass from the front desk and enjoy a free visit three times before getting a membership. Summer is here and so is grilling season. Sides are just as important to a barbecue dinner as the main grilled meal. Get some new ideas to take to a barbecue or add to your favourite meal at home.
